Long Tail Keywords for Local SEO
Quite a lot of my time is spent working out how to improve the SEO for my website and the websites of my clients.
And improving their SEO in local search is a massive priority.
And the situation I often encounter is the following.
A customer has an average/good website, but isn't really getting much traffic from SEO. How do they increase their SEO?
Option 1: The biggest change they can make is spend thousands of dollars and rebuild their website with a professional web design agency. But this process is expensive, takes a hell of a lot of time and doesn't guarantee any improvements of SEO.
Option 2: They can pay an agency to do "SEO" for their website. However the results can vary from agency to agency, depending on how they try to increase SEO. Sometimes they can even cause more damage than good.
Option 3 (and my favourite): The website needs to start ranking for long tail keywords. I'll explain this in a few seconds.
Short tail keywords are search terms like "digital marketing" or "home builder". These terms are extremely competitive and get lots of searches but are almost impossible to rank on the first page in Google for.
Long tail keywords are search terms like "digital marketing for small businesses in Adelaide" or "custom home builder in Adelaide". These terms get a lot less traffic, but are very easy for your website to rank #1 in Google for, or at least on the first page.
It's much better to rank #1 in Google for 20 long tail keywords, than never rank your website for a super competitive keyword.
The best way to start ranking for long tail keywords is by writing articles or creating landing pages on your website that target these keywords.
This is a quick, cheap and guaranteed way of increasing your SEO.
Example of Long Tail Keywords
RC Star is an excellent example of a business that can use long tail keywords to dominate SEO. They sell wraps, decals and stickers for 1:5 scale remote control cars. It’s a very niche industry, but this gives them great opportunity to dominate long tail keywords.
They can target certain brand names, or types of RC cars which allows them to drive lots of qualified traffic back to their website.
